Kodagu is a small District rich in coffee plantation and have beautiful sceneries of forest, rivers and tourist places comprising of three taluks viz.. Madikeri, Virajpet and Somwarpet and have the population of 5, 45, 322. Kodagu is having the total area of 4102 Sq kms. Kodagu is a hilly area. Madikeri, the district Head Quarters is above 1270 meters from the sea level. Its physical features are full of diversity. It has valleys, plains, lush green forest, Paddy fields, Coffee and cardamom plantations. It is called the “Kashmir of south India and Switzerland of India". It is known for its scenic beauty and attracts tourists in large numbers. River Cauvery originates from Kodagu.

Genesis of Krishi Vigyan Kendra with mandate

Krishi Vigyan Kendra is situated in the Kodagu district of Karnataka established in 1954 by the Karnataka State Government, it was transferred to IIHR on February 1, 1972.   The center has an area of 17.5 ha.  It was started with the objectives of investigating the nature and causes of citrus dieback disease in Kodagu and nearby areas.  Till 1991, this was functioning as the Citrus Experiment Station and was converted into a full-fledged KVK in 1992.
KVK is functioning under Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) in Kodagu District. It is started in the year 1976 in the first phase batch of KVKs sanctioned under ICAR. First it was in Chettalli, where Central Horticultural Experimental Station (CHES) under IIHR, concentrating on research in the District. Later during the year 1992 the erstwhile Citrus Experimental Station, Gonikoppal activities have been shifted to Chettalli and Krishi Vigyan Kendra has been shifted to Gonikoppal. Since then KVK is actively involved in transfer of technologies aspects which pertains to the mandates of KVK. The earlier mandates of KVK are Transfer of technology, conducting trainings to the farmers and rural youths to take up the self employment programme. Also to implement lab to land programme, National demonstration and ORP programmes to cater to the needs of the rural community. Over the period the mandates of KVK as been changed to-

■ Technology assessment, refinement and demonstration of technology/products
■ On-farm testing to identify the location specificity of agricultural technologies under various farming systems
■ Frontline demonstrations to establish its production potentials on the farmers’ fields
■ Training of farmers to update their knowledge and skills in modern agricultural technologies, and training of extension personnel to orient them in the frontier areas of technology development
■ To work as resource and knowledge centre of agricultural technology for supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural economy of the district
■ In order to create awareness about improved technology, a large number of extension activities will be taken up
■ The seeds and planting materials produced by the KVKs will also be made available to the farmers

On Farm Testings (OFT)
■ It is a confirmation of proven research results under real farming situation
■ The objective of On Farm Testing is to test and evaluate the research findings of Research Stations at the farmer's field and to refine and modify the technologies, if required for better adoption by farmers
■ A total of 185 Testings in 34 villages were conducted during 1992 to 2010 on Agriculture, Horticulture, Plant Protection, Hom.

Front Line Demonstration (FLDs)

The Field demonstrations conducted under the close supervision of the scientists of the National Agriculture Research system are called Front Line Demonstrations.

A total of 336 demonstrations covering 67 villages in the field of Agriculture, Horticulture, Plant Protection, Home Science and Live stock fields were carried out in the district.

Trainings

The KVK has organized both On campus and Off campus training programmes for the practicing farmers, farm women and rural youth. The trainings were imparted on courses/subjects/skills like Soil-conservation, improved production technology of various agricultural and vegetables crops, flower crops, fruit crops, fertilizer management, plant protection, post harvest technology, value addition to the produce, Vermiculture, Nutrition & Health and other income generating activities.
 
A total number of 4939 trainings (both On and Off campus) for the benefit of 81125 stake holders (11068 men and 70057 women) in the field of Horticulture, Agriculture livestock and Home Science were imparted.

Extension Activities

In order to speed up the process of transfer of technology, KVK, has rendered its yeoman service in the district by conducting multifaceted extension programmes. The KVK conducted field visits, advisory services, field days under OFT and FLD villages, exhibitions, soil testing campaigns, vaccination campaigns, animal health camps, radio talks, phone in programmes, T V coverages etc.

Contribution of the Station to the region

Krishi Vigyan Kendra strives its best to improve the quality production and productivity of Horticulture, Agriculture and allied subjects through implementing need based ICAR/University technologies.

Contributed towards increasing the yield of Banana, Citrus and Vegetables by introducing IIHR Banana, Citrus and Vegetable specials.

KVK has contributed towards reducing the fruit loss in Coorg mandarin by introducing IIHR developed Fruit fly Pheromone traps  

Imparted knowledge in various fields of Horticulture, Agriculture , Preservation, Home science and Animal science by conducting 4939 trainings (both On and Off campus) for the benefit of 81125 stake holders.

Increasing the yield and quality of French bean by introducing  Arka suvidha and Arka komal  

Popularized Paddy Variety Tunga which is tolerant to Blast Disease and also high yielding

Introduced and Popularized Duroc Pig rearing in the district, which has an advantage of high meat production and low fat content.

Popularized home scale preservation and self employment.
